Lightbulb lets talk about emo

WHY IS THERE CONFUSION?!

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

As touched upon previously, in the mid-90s emo went through a whole phase when new screamy emo bands stopped appearing. The scene sort of died out, probably due to saturation and lack of interest. When this happened, a phase of emo occured quite horribly referred to as "post-emo-indie-rock". It's my opinion that this stage is to blame for most of the confusion, and why bands like Jimmy Eat World and Deep Elm Records bands are thought of as emo. Probably evolving from the likes of The Hated and Evergreen rather than Moss Icon, bands like Cap'n'Jazz, Sunny Day Real Estate and Braid made upbeat quirky pop. Because these bands made catchy music it wasn't long until similar bands started appearing in the mainstream, and the press of course got a hold of the emo term and bastardised it.

These days emo is applied to any band which sounds like these mid-90s poppy emo bands (Jimmy Eat World, etc.), leaving an entire category of music fans unaware of the hardcore roots. Another reason it is often misused is because although emo has changed a lot in the last two decades, the attitude towards it from grass roots hardcore fans has remained the same. Most deny any relation to hardcore and often label it "pussy" and "queer", even when it comes to the chaotic style (which, funnily enough, is often far more intense and challenging to listen to than straight-up HC). Thursday, who did come from a DIY emo background (they infamously supported Neil Perry, a US screamo band), were one of the first to go mainstream and are probably to blame for so many bands being mislabelled screamo and the whole misrepresentation of yet another emo buzzword.
please read more on this site http://www.mesaverde.co.uk/mp3/ educate yourself.

Emo style has become broader over the years. In the beginning, these bands consisted mostly of people who played in hardcore punk bands, got burned out its limited forms, and moved to a guitar-oriented, midtempo rock-based sound with emotional punk vocals (i.e., no posed soulful crooning like pop music). The central aspect here is the guitars - distorted, strummed mostly in duo unison, with occasional catchy riff highlights. This becomes known as the classic "D.C. sound," along with the octave chords that show up in later "emo" music. Later bands bring in more pop elements, like catchy-riff based songs, pop song structures (listen to Jawbreaker's "Chesterfield King" to illustrate this), and less-punk, more-smoothly-sung high-register singing (less yelling, straining, throatiness). Listen to Elliot or Chamberlain for an example of how alternative-pop this music has become. Yet those bands are undeniably still emocore. Also note most emo bands play Gibson Les Paul guitars, with a few SGs, and use mostly Marshall JCM-800 amps...Emo has recently evolved into something more complex since the D.C. era. Bands have adopted to more obscure lyrics along with intricate riffs and interesting vocals.

Old-School Emo bands:
Rites of Spring, Embrace, Gray Matter, Ignition, Dag Nasty, Monsula, Fugazi kind of, Fuel, Samiam, Friction, Soulside, early Lifetime, Split Lip/Chamberlain, Kerosene 454, Indian Summer, Moss Icon, Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Swing Kids.

Modern Emo/Screamo Bands
Hot Cross, Saetia, A Day in Black and White, You And I, The Kite-Flying Society, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Portrait, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, The Kodan Armada, Off Minor, Joshua Fit for Battle, Circle Takes the Square, City of Caterpillar, pageninteynine,Usurp Synapse, Clikatat Ikatowi

the filipino youth are victims of the trend MTV emo has become,
i got the idea to start this thread when i was listening to most of the bands on myspace that label themselves emo and/or screamo.

to my disappointment, i only heard bands in tight pants playing pop-punk with screaming and high pitched vocals, stating their influences as Alesana, Saosin, Typecast, Chicosci, The Used, Silverstein, and Finch. bands that are clearly NOT emo.

(i tried searching emo, then screamo, then every time i try searching for filipino bands influenced by bands like Indian Summer or Moss Icon, only Capulette comes out, much to my dismay. at least Riddle Testament shares some of our influences.)

seeing as a majority of the youth think emo is a culture of kids in greasy hair, tight shirts, tight pants, cut wrists and unjustifiable sadness, here's a simple guide to introducing emo to the filipino youth.

1.EMO IS NOT A CULTURE, it is music, and it is a scene. the crying, the wrist cutting, and the fashion isn't part of anything, it's all garbage. there is no such thing as emo kids, only hardcore kids that play and listen to emo.

2.EMO STEMS FROM HARDCORE, so you have to know your roots, for starters, try searching the internet for facts about 80s Hardcore, Straight Edge History (it's ok even if you're not edge), Veganism, and the hardcore scene of years gone past.

3.LEARN TO READ, a lot of kids copy-paste things and articles from sites like wikipedia and fourfa.com without even going into the bands and events mentioned there. reading and understanding teaches you a lot.

4.BE OPEN MINDED, if there's one thing i learned here in rakista, if you don't know one thing another person knows, you're called a poser, and if you know more than they do, you're called mayabang. hell, people are called mayabang because they write in coherent english. anyway, just remember that there is nothing wrong with a CONVERSATION. being bigoted will only make you look like an ass.

5.SELF EMPOWERMENT, emo bands are made for catharsis, to make people feel better, if there's one thing i see people do, it's using emo to make people feel less of themselves, turning it into a culture where the anorexic nerd in glasses and greasy hair who cuts his wrist and cries is the standard of coolness. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GRAB YOUR LIFE AROUND THE NECK AND SHOW IT WHO'S BOSS. YOU HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE A CHANGE

6.SCENES AND INVOLVEMENT, if you aren't part of a scene, then how are you going to help the people you associate yourself with? read zines, organize shows, promote bands and their demos. DO SOMETHING, if you claim to love the scene you're in without doing anything to help it, then are you really loving the scene? in fact, you should extend an open hand to greater things like helping the poor, speaking up to the local government about issues, assisting charities, helping your local Church/Temple/Whateverit'scalled.

7.REMEMBER THE PIONEERS, listen to the REAL EMO bands, Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Fugazi, Moss Icon, Indian Summer, Portrats Of Past, Julia, Policy Of Three, and Still Life worked so hard to put out.

dapat bigyan ng isang dissertation ng mga sociologist ang pag-evolve ng isang culture batay sa umuusbong na trend sa music para mas malinaw.

to make this simple, emo is the new grunge.

the way my friend call this fashioncore is 'mga high school'.

anyway, baka magkaroon ng kumplikasyon ang trend na ito at tulad ng ibang emo threads bigla na lang nasasara dahil sa init ng usapan. sana naman ayusin ang diskusyon at punahin muna yung article sa taas bago mag-react.

kaya nga it's BASTARDIZED. and MCR isnt emo in the first place. and if you put to it that the genre HAS EMOTIONAL LYRICS, then SHARON CUNETA must be emo too. right?

hello? 80's pa nag-simula ang emo bands no. but why was it exploited? it's because of the scenekids in the us. simula nung isinilang ang mga scene bands such as dashboard, saosin, hawthorne heights, the used, etc. these bands have emotional lyrics daw kaya EMO na, though NOT. and hanggang sa dumating na dito yan sa pinas, ayun puro misconception na about sa music. too bad nahaluan pa ng CULTURE bullcr@p stuffs.

since emo is considered hardcore, yes there is. but not directly emo is punk.

*o there's no flaming a. masyadong sensitive ang mods dito about the topic e. ampf.

i never gave a damn about labels... kahit nung panahon ng hiphop versus metal sa mga lansangan noong 90's up to... em... what ever gropies you kids all have today today...

labels are not only sometimes insulting to others but it is harmful to yourselves, it makes you inflexible, predictable boring

listen to the music you want because you like...
dress the way you want because it is what you want...
etcetera ad valorem
